This is how we bond

NaPoWriMo Day 24 and today’s poem is called This is how we bond.

This is how we bond.

The first time we meet

I notice your lips and eyes

crease into a smile,

your shoulders are loose,

your palms open andContinue reading “This is how we bond”

The Lady of the Moor

NaPoWriMo Day 22. Today’s poem is inspired by a prompt by NaPoWriMo on day 18 which was to try to write a ruba’i which is a four-line stanza, with a rhyme scheme of AABA. Robert Frost’s famous poem Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening uses this rhyme scheme. Not sure how successful it is but it felt like I should try something a bit gothic so here goes

The Lady of the Moor

In the ruins on a clear winter’s night
when the moon is full and bright
it’s said there appears the ghostly sight
of the Lady of the Moor

Upon her head sits a braided crown
long silver hair flowing down
covering a near translucent gown
she searches for love that cannot be found.Continue reading “The Lady of the Moor”

My Magic Box

NaPoWriMo Day 21 and today’s poem is called My Magic Box, after Kit Wright’s The Magic Box. I wrote this some time ago but have reworked it a little so I think I can count it in project NaPoWriMo 2014.

 My Magic Box

I will put into the box
the stuff that disappointments are made from,
missed opportunities brought about by fear,
the heavy burden of guilt that follows no logic.

I will put into the box
my failings as a mother, lover, daughter
black hearted words that fell so easily from my tongue,
my father’s dying breath

I will put into the box
dark thoughts that paralyse me with self-loathing,
days when I am blighted by inexplicable sadness,
feelings of loss for something that was never there.

I will put into the box
the red hot pain of betrayal
the purple sting of failure
and the green poison of envy.

My box is made of basalt reinforced with titanium and steel
with a hole big enough for me to push through the key once locked,
to keep it so forever

I will bury my box under a mountain
and leave it to lie undiscovered for all time
so that I may never have to face again
the source of my inadequacies.

Sleepless

NaPoWriMo Day 19 and today’s poem is called Sleepless, actually written at roughly three-thirty this morning. Is the NaPoWriMo thing beginning to get to me I wonder?

Sleepless

It’s one-thirty in the morning

and I’m lying here eyes open

trying not to think about

things I shouldn’t think about

two-thirty in the morning and

the tune inside my head isContinue reading “Sleepless”

Manhood

NaPoWriMo Day 17 and today’s poem is called Manhood.

Manhood

Begrudgingly, you allow a peck.

I squeeze your giant frame

and we both feel discomfort.

Me because I miss that small, vulnerable being

who placed his hand in mine

and walked with me through magic worlds;Continue reading “Manhood”

Gentle Spring

NaPoWriMo Day 16. Over the half way mark now. Today’s poem is called Gentle Spring. I thought I’d write something inspired by the lovely weather we’re having at the moment. Although I’m not much of a gardener I do love the sight of spring flowers, the first butterflies and the big fat bumble bees when they crash into my conservatory windows. They’re so huge they’re not even in the slightest bit stunned. Marvelous. Anyway here it is. It’s called Gentle Spring

Gentle Spring

Chilled mornings

clinging on to winter

give way to almost summer

as the day moves on.Continue reading “Gentle Spring”
